What causes an ice dam?
Heat escaping into your attic warms the roof deck and melts the snow on it. That meltwater runs down to the cold eave — which hangs over unheated space — and refreezes into a ridge of ice. More meltwater pools behind that dam and works its way up under your shingles and into the house. Minnesota’s 45–60 freeze-thaw cycles a winter make it relentless.
Why “just add insulation” isn’t enough
Air leakage loses more heat than conduction in most homes, so a leaky attic with deep insulation can still feed ice dams. You have to air-seal the ceiling plane first — top plates, can lights, and every penetration — then insulate to R-49–R-60, then make sure the roof can breathe.
The complete fix
- Ice & water shield at the eaves (past the interior wall line) and full-width in valleys.
- Air sealing + R-49–R-60 insulation to keep the deck cold.
- Balanced ventilation — ridge-vent exhaust with soffit intake — so the attic stays cold and dry.
- Properly sized gutters so meltwater drains instead of pooling.
Older one-and-a-half-story and Cape Cod homes (think Armatage, Nokomis, or Powderhorn) are especially prone because their knee-wall attics are hard to vent — they need extra detailing to get right.

Should you remove ice dams?
Yes—remove ice dams that are backing water up under shingles or causing interior leaks, because trapped meltwater seeps into walls and ceilings. Use low-pressure steam, never hammers or chippers, which damage shingles. Longer term, fix the cause by air-sealing and insulating the attic and improving ventilation so the roof stays cold.
Will a new roof fix ice dams?
Not by itself. A new roof with a proper ice-and-water shield membrane protects against leaks when dams form, but ice dams are caused by attic heat melting snow unevenly. Lasting prevention pairs the membrane with attic air-sealing, insulation, and ventilation. Replacing shingles alone, without addressing heat loss, won’t stop the dams.
How worried should I be about ice dams?
In Minnesota, ice dams are worth taking seriously—they can force water under shingles and into walls, ceilings, and insulation, causing rot and mold. A little roof-edge ice isn’t always urgent, but dams with large icicles or interior water stains signal active leaking and should be addressed before the next thaw.
