Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles & Your Insurance
Minnesota’s hail guide: what Class 4 means, and how it can lower your premium.

What “Class 4” actually means
To earn a Class 4 rating, a shingle has to survive a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking. Manufacturers hit that with polymer-reinforced asphalt or composite/rubberized shingles that absorb impact instead of shattering.
Why it pays off in Minnesota
The average Minnesota hail claim is now around $30,000. Class 4 shingles take that punishment better, meaning fewer claims and longer roof life. And because they reduce the insurer’s risk, many carriers offer a discount on your premium when you install them — ask yours.
The catch: installation still matters
A premium shingle on a rushed install still leaks. The Class 4 shingle is one part of a system — ice & water shield, proper flashing, and ventilation do the rest. We’re a GAF Certified contractor, so the install is backed by the strongest warranties available.
