Where the Money Goes in a Twin Cities Kitchen Remodel

Ask what a kitchen remodel costs in the Twin Cities and you’ll hear numbers from $30,000 to $150,000, which is about as useful as “a vehicle costs somewhere between a scooter and a Suburban.” The more useful question is where the money actually goes — because once you see the breakdown, you can steer the budget instead of being steered by it.
The rough anatomy of a kitchen budget
Cabinets: 25 to 30 percent. The single biggest line, and the widest price range. Stock cabinets, semi-custom, and full custom can differ by a factor of three for the same footprint. This is where the budget is won or lost.
Labor and installation: 20 to 25 percent. Demo, carpentry, tile, finish work. This is also where cut-rate bids hide their savings — and where you feel it when doors don’t line up and the island wobbles.
Appliances: 10 to 20 percent depending entirely on your taste in ranges. Countertops: about 10 percent. Plumbing and electrical: 10 to 15 percent — more in older homes, and we’ll come back to that. Flooring, lighting, paint and tile fill out the rest.
The Twin Cities wrinkle: what’s behind the walls
A big share of our kitchen work is in homes from the 1920s through the 1970s, and the surprise costs live behind the plaster: knob-and-tube or undersized electrical that can’t legally power a modern kitchen, galvanized supply lines at end-of-life, and framing adventures from previous owners. Budgeting a contingency of 10 to 15 percent isn’t pessimism in an older house, it’s arithmetic. A good contractor opens up the highest-risk areas early so surprises surface in week one, not week nine.
Where to spend and where to save
Spend on layout changes that fix how the kitchen works — that’s the remodel you’ll feel every day for twenty years. Spend on cabinet boxes and hardware you touch constantly. Save on trend-driven finishes that are easy to swap later: lighting, hardware, even backsplash. And think hard before moving plumbing walls; relocating the sink twelve feet is often a five-figure decision hiding inside a design whim.
