Soffit, Fascia & Gutters: How Your Roofline Protects Your Home

Soffit, fascia and gutter along a home's roofline

Your roofline is a team. Soffit, fascia, and gutters each do a job, and when one fails, the others — and your home — suffer. Here’s how the system works.

What each part does

  • Soffit: the underside of the eave. Its vents let your attic breathe — critical for preventing ice dams and moisture.
  • Fascia: the board along the roof edge. It supports the bottom row of shingles and anchors the gutters.
  • Gutters: channel roof runoff away from your foundation, siding, and landscaping.

Why it matters in Minnesota

Proper soffit ventilation keeps your attic cold in winter, which is one of the best defenses against ice dams. Clogged gutters and rotted fascia let water back up under the roof — exactly where you don’t want it.

Signs of trouble

  • Peeling paint or rot on the fascia
  • Sagging or overflowing gutters
  • Pests or birds nesting in soffit gaps
  • Ice dams every winter
