Roof Ventilation 101: Why Minnesota Attics Need to Breathe

When we tear off a failed roof in the Twin Cities, the shingles usually get blamed. But at least half the time, the autopsy points somewhere else: the attic underneath never got enough air. Cooked shingles, rotted decking, moldy sheathing, ice dams every winter — all of it traces back to ventilation. It’s the least glamorous part of a roof and the one we end up explaining most often, so here’s the plain-English version.

How attic ventilation is supposed to work

Think of your attic as a chimney lying on its side. Cool outside air enters low through the soffit vents under your eaves, warms slightly, rises along the underside of the roof deck, and exits at the peak through a ridge vent. That steady wash of air does two jobs: it carries out moisture that drifts up from the living space, and it keeps the roof deck close to the outdoor temperature year-round.

In July, that airflow keeps the deck from turning into a griddle that bakes your shingles from below. In January, it keeps the deck cold so snow melts evenly instead of feeding ice dams at the eaves. Same system, both seasons.

Where Minnesota attics go wrong

The most common failure we find isn’t missing vents, it’s blocked ones. Insulation gets blown in over the years and slumps into the soffit bays, and the intake side of the system suffocates. You can have a beautiful ridge vent doing nothing because no air can get in down low. Baffles, the foam or cardboard chutes stapled between rafters, are a two-dollar part that keeps that channel open, and we still open up attics that never got them.

The second failure is mixing systems. A powered attic fan or box vents combined with a ridge vent can short-circuit the airflow, pulling air from the nearest opening instead of the soffits. And bath fans ducted straight into the attic instead of outside? We find those weekly, quietly loading the framing with moisture every shower.

The signs worth acting on

Frost on the underside of the roof deck in winter. A musty smell up there in spring. Shingles aging faster on one slope. Ice dams that keep coming back after you’ve added insulation. Any of those means the attic isn’t breathing, and no shingle upgrade will outrun it.
